Why Should I Care About Peter Weller?

by christopher taylor

Who is Peter Weller? You likely know him as RoboCop. Or, rather, the guy in the RoboCop suit. Or possibly as Alex Murphy in RoboCop 2. While I admit that these are great movies (on a fairly campy reading of "great"), they represent neither an impressive list of credits by themselves, nor the kind of star-making push that would justify the Showtime marketing department acting as it has, especially given that we are now over a decade removed from the last WellerCop.

So I pose the question: why should I care about some actor who's recent body of work as been a mixture of shitty drama, shitty sci fi, and shitty horror (Roger Daltrey?)? Why advertise a television show on the strength of its weakest link? Is it because people really value star power so highly? Or is it just that the marketers think of the public as exceedingly superficial?

I suspect the latter. Which is why I predict Odyssey 5 will fail within a few weeks, despite suckling a wealthy supercable bosom.

Now excuse me while I sit down and watch xXx again. Vin Diesel's so hot.
