SY started drop-in hours a couple of months ago. I’ve had three occasions to partially staff them. The first time out had two youth, a staff member, and myself sitting around talking about Lady Gaga, Sad Kermit, and “Glee.” The most recent time around had two different youth, a different staff member, and I chatting about Clerks II, Robert Pattinson, and “Glee.” But the tone was very different. The object that facilitated conversation the first time around was a computer. The second time around involved a plastic Jenga knock-off. The first time around, the conversation was intentionally superficial. This time around, the conversation veered into the more personal.
A common thought I keep having: I’ve become that creepy old man who’s trying to stay young by listening to modern pop radio, watching teen-friendly movings, and fraternizing with high school students. Ick. Oh well.
It’s less creepy if you listen more than talk. Maybe you should try getting paid for it by becoming a high school teacher.
